The Donkey Path (Makrades)
On the northwestern side of Corfu, near Paleokastritsa and the village of Makrades, you will find a trail overlooking the bay of Agios Georgios Pagon, Afionas, and the Diapontia Islands in the distance. The “Donkey Path” is part of a route that once connected Angelokastro with the beach of Agios Georgios Pagon when the Venetians unloaded supplies, which were carried by donkeys to the castle. It has now become a walking route perfect for nice photos.
To reach the viewpoint, the easiest route is from the village of Makrades. Just before the trail, there is a small parking area. The best views are within the first 300 meters of the trail. In the first 100 meters, on your right, there is also a small cave. It is a popular choice for hikers throughout the year, offering views along the route. The initial section is a well-maintained stone path, however as you continue down, the trail is in worse condition. It is safe to walk, but there is always a risk of falling rocks in certain areas, so be cautious.
It is best to walk the trail in the morning because the sun is behind the mountains during those hours. Alternatively, you can enjoy the sunset.
